Compassionate care for substance abuse & other addictive behaviors
You’re noticing that your relationship to alcohol or another substance has become unhealthy. Perhaps substance abuse or misuse interferes with the quality of your studies, work, relationships, or personal commitments. Or maybe you’re curious about how your use has changed over time or in particular settings. You may not be sure about the specific changes you’re looking to make at this point. That is totally okay.
You’re looking for a non-judgmental space to explore how the relationship has and has not been serving you and identify options, at your pace.
I apply flexible, compassionate, and evidence-based approaches to addressing issues with substance use and other addictive or compulsive behaviors. I understand that each client’s pathway to recovery is unique and not necessarily a linear one. We’ll continue to build the skills you’ll need to make the change process feel attainable and sustainable.
I have a biopsychosocial approach to understanding and assessing substance use issues. We’ll delve deeper in the constellation of traits/attributes and experiences that have influenced the development of the unhealthy behaviors, rather than exclusively focusing on treating the unwanted or problematic behaviors.
I’ve trained extensively in harm reduction and believe in the importance of meeting each client at whichever stage they’re at in terms of promoting change. For clients who are contemplating reducing or moderating their use, I utilize Motivational Interviewing (MI) to empower clients to make choices that draw upon existing strengths and make progress towards achieving goals that are in line with their core values. I also habitually incorporate Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) techniques and help clients practice riding out urges to use/ act.
